Top heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek looks to continue his heavyweight success as he faces former title challenger Michael Grant. Adamek is a former light heavyweight and cruiserweight world champion, who has surprised some with his success at heavyweight. He is coming off a gutsy decision over top contender Chris Arreola. Grant, meanwhile, looks to jump-start a sagging boxing career that once carried great promise.

If someone told you ten years ago that you could have Michael Grant as a 6-1 underdog against Tomasz Adamek, it would have been almost inconceivable. Grant was being touted as the boxing betting heavyweight heir-apparent, while Adamek was a green light heavyweight. But a decade has changed everything. Now Adamek is a heavyweight hopeful and Grant is looking to break out of boxing purgatory.

At the end of the 90’s, Grant was heavily fancied. Stuck in the sometimes-monotonous reign of Lennox Lewis, Grant was seen as the next great thing. Athletic and coordinated at 6’7” with a mind-numbing 86-inch reach, there was little to not like about the kid. Then Lennox Lewis emphatically annihilated him in 2 brutal rounds. In his comeback, he busted his ankle, leading to a TKO loss to Jameel McCline. He put together a little winning streak, but after undefeated Dominick Guinn knocked him out in 2003, Grant more or less disappeared.

It’s been 7 years since he’s been in a visible fight. It’s as if he was blackballed. He looked so promising, that watching him get stopped thrice was just hard to stomach for some people. The book on him says that he’s a talented and gifted athlete first and a fighter second. He just lacked the edge you like to see in top fighters. In his losses, he seemed to cave in from mental fragility more than anything else.

Nevertheless, it is a bit sad that he never received another opportunity until now. He has continued fighting, but with no key fights being offered, his motivation understandably dipped, leading to a very sporadic schedule over the past 5 years or so. If Grant were able to win this fight, it would be a Lazarus-like reemergence to the top of the division. At first, this matchup seemed kind of strange. The closer we get to fight night, however, the more interesting it seems.

Adamek will be fighting with disadvantages of six inches in height and nearly a foot in reach. But what he has going for him is far more compelling. He will be fighting before his people in Newark, where their large Polish population turns out in droves to cheer on their hero. Adamek has been awesome since his only loss to Chad Dawson 3.5 years ago. His cruiserweight campaign culminated in a signature win over excellent champion Steve Cunningham. At heavyweight, he is unusually resourceful and mentally sharp, in addition to his durability and grit.

What he has between his ears is what really distinguishes Adamek. Watching him outmaneuver Arreola was a true pleasure. Arreola was stronger by a long shot, but Adamek was so tough and smart, that it was hard to not feel some admiration for the guy. Beating quality 250+ pound heavyweights when you were fighting 175-pounders a few years before says a lot about his character.

It is difficult to gauge where Grant really is at this point. Is this a last paycheck or a final opportunity he is taking seriously? At the end of the day, we have a guy who maximizes his ability (Adamek) facing a guy who has always minimized his (Grant). At the same time, upset players might be inclined to take a 6-1 underdog who is a significantly bigger man and not without merit at 46-3.

Prediction: Despite the apparent appeal at taking a crapshoot with Grant, this appears to be an easy win for Adamek. With all respect to Grant, there has always seemed to be a little something lacking in his psyche to make for a successful fighter. If you could put Adamek’s head on Grant’s body, you would have a world-beater. Grant, however, just never had the requisite toughness, grit, or the fighting instinct to impose himself on his physically less-gifted opposition.

Adamek will make it uncomfortable for Grant right away. Having not fought good opposition for 7 years, Grant will find the workrate and sharpness of Adamek to be very bothersome. He will give it a go, but Adamek will be throwing crisp combinations that will soon have Grant wavering. After about 6 rounds of this, Grant will be out of the fight. I like Adamek by TKO anytime around the 7th round. I think “under” is a good bet here. If Grant pulls off the unthinkable, it doesn’t figure to be by decision.
